Did you know that 1 in 14 people have a lifelong condition called Developmental Language Disorder? This Friday the 16th October marks the 4th International Raising Awareness of Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) Day!
DLD is a common but often unidentified communication disorder that affects a person’s ability to understand and/or use language for no known reason. Children and adults with DLD can struggle to understand instructions, find the right words, make sentences and use language for social interactions. Research has shown that while DLD affects 7.5% of the world’s population which is two children in every classroom with 30 children, it remains hidden!
The theme of this year’s campaign is “DLD See Me” with the focus on giving children and adults with DLD a voice.
So what are we doing here in Powerstown ETNS to shine a light on DLD this year? We are asking all students to wear purple or yellow or both on Friday. Our Speech & Language Therapist Neasa has organised some socially distanced activities for classes to help everyone learn more about communication in school, and the key highlight will be showing the video by the Birch Class and their teacher Aoife to help everyone learn more about DLD: video link.
This year the world, and Ireland, are lighting up purple and yellow to shine a light on DLD as part of the Light Up campaign.
